George Magovern Jr., M.D., Co-Director
Dr. Magovern, Jr. is Chairman of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and
Program Director for postgraduate education in cardio-thoracic surgery. He has
leadership roles in the key administrative and academic committees of the
institution, including the Allegheny General Board of Directors, and the
Corporate Operations, Corporate Management and Chairman's Executive Committees.
He completed his residency
training and fellowship at the Johns Hopkins Hospital after receiving
his medical degree from the University of Pittsburgh School of
Medicine. Dr. Magovern is a diplomate of the National Board of Medical
Examiners, the American Board of Surgery and the American Board of
Thoracic Surgery. In addition, he is a member of more than a dozen
local and national professional/scientific societies, including the
American College of Surgeons, the American College of Cardiology, the
International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation and the
Pennsylvania Association for Thoracic Surgery, among others. A reviewer
for the Annals of Thoracic Surgery, the Journal of Heart and Lung
Transplantation, the Journal of Cardiac Surgery and the ASAIO Journal,
Dr. Magovern also serves in the national Thoracic Surgery Directors
Association, as well as on the board of directors for the Center for
Organ Recovery and Education. The author of more than 60 original
publications, abstracts and textbook chapters, Dr. Magovern has
lectured regionally and nationally on topics such as dynamic
cardiomyoplasty and left-ventricular assist devices and the failing
heart.
