Inpatient Services
Immediate transfer of critically ill patients to the medical or
cardio-thoracic surgical intensive care units that are directed by
the physicians of the Allegheny Center for Lung and Thoracic Disease is available following appropriate
consultation with referring physicians. This consultation can be
immediately obtained through the center's clinical office. The transfer of
critically ill patients to the care of
the center's specialists may also be arranged through the center's
clinical coordinator. Appropriate transfer to the dedicated thoracic
surgical intermediate care facility for patients with ongoing subacute
lung or thoracic processes can also be arranged without delay.
Patients undergoing elective hospital admission through the medical and surgical
specialists of the center also receive their care in these specially designated units.
Specifically trained nursing, dietary, rehabilitation and respiratory therapy staff
are assigned to the care of the patient in these disease-specific treatment facilities.
Concentrating the efforts of such expert medical and paramedical personnel facilitates
the most appropriate and timely management of the lung or thoracic disease affecting
the patient, which leads to improved treatment outcomes and shorter hospital stays.

Through Allegheny General Hospital, the center makes available a variety
of inpatient units specifically designed to meet the unique needs of patients with pulmonary
problems who require hospitalization.
