Outpatient Services
Central processing of patient registration, appropriation of important clinical records and X-rays, and scheduling of consultation by the appropriate medical/surgical specialists are arranged through the clinical coordinator of Allegheny Center for Lung and Thoracic Disease. Primary referral for individual physician consultation is arranged in a timely fashion through the central office, and additional ancillary diagnostic and/or therapeutic support is similarly coordinated so the patient's encounter with the center achieves expeditious and comprehensive management. Many of the problems facing the patient with a significant thoracic problem require the concerted efforts of the center's various specialists. The traditional work-up of the patient has often taken several days to be accomplished and required many varied visits to a number of remote physician specialists. The center's staff recognizes the inconvenience and awkwardness of these traditional practices and provides an atmosphere of "one-stop shopping" for the patient with a significant lung or thoracic disease process. Radiology and pulmonary function assessment are readily available on site at the center. A full complement of specialists in the various disease processes managed through the center is available for daily consultation. Subsequent diagnostic testing or necessary surgery is arranged at the patient's earliest or most appropriate convenience through the coordinating medical staff of the center. Complete dietary, rehabilitation and social service consultation also is immediately available when needed for the patient. The completely relational computerized patient care database developed for the clinical activities of the center allows all members of the clinical team immediate, up-to-date patient information for efficient and effective communication.
