Present management concepts for esophageal carcinoma

In this issue of Clinical Update, we summarize the present diagnostic and therapeutic approach strategies at hand for the management of carcinoma of the esophagus and gastroesophageal junction. At our Allegheny Center for Lung and Thoracic Disease, a multispecialty group of medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, gastroenterologists and thoracic surgeons meet to discuss the individual patient's problem and decide upon the most efficacious and meaningful treatment options.

The disease process of esophageal cancer can present itself in a variety of ways, and no one therapy is necessarily the best option of care. Support services for the patients' potential pulmonary disability related to therapy are assessed by the pulmonary specialists of the Center, and staff dieticians and nutritional support team members likewise support the patients' overall nutritional needs.

Today, we recognize that the most effective approach to this disease involves the cooperation and support of these complementary specialties and support services. We hope that this issue provides you with further insight into the problem of carcinoma of the esophagus and the treatment options available.
