The future of surgery: minimally invasive approaches
Surgeons of the Allegheny Center for Laparoscopic and Minimally Invasive Surgery were
the first in the tri-state region, and among the first in North America, to use minimally
invasive approaches to:
- Thoracoscopic lung resection for lung cancer
- Coronary artery bypass surgery
- Cardiac valvular surgery
- Colorectal cancer resection
- Cryosurgery to treat prostate and kidney cancers
- Microdisectomy for cervical, thoracic and lumbar spinal disorders
- Thoracoscopic management of pulmonary emphysema (lung volume reduction surgery)
- Thoracoscopic management of mediastinal tumors (neurogenic and thymic)
- Thoracoscopic management of myasthenia gravis
- Laparoscopic hyperbaric surgery for morbid obeisty
- Laparoscopic fundoplication for gastroesophageal reflux disease
- Combined laparoscopic and thoracoscopic staging of esophgogastric cancer prior to esophagectomy
- Laparoscopic correction of achalasia, esophageal diverticula and benign esophageal tumors
- Thoracoscopic assisted esophagectomy
- Breast biopsy
In addition to these primary surgical experiences, the surgeons of the
Allegheny Center for Laparoscopic and Minimally Invasive Surgery
have accumulated some of the largest clinical experiences with minimally
invasive surgical approaches in the country. They have established themselves
as national leaders in the development of these approaches, aimed at reducing
patient morbidity and hospital costs while also resulting in speedier
recovery from surgery.
Because minimally invasive methods can now be applied to most types of surgical procedures, the
center's treatment team includes specialists in the areas of cardiothoracic surgery, gynecologic
surgery, general surgery, neurosurgery, orthopaedic surgery, urologic surgery and oncologic surgery.
