Thoracic Surgical Services
The specialty of thoracic surgery
is directed toward the operative management of disorders of the chest.
Primary disease processes in which thoracic surgery has an important
role is in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer, mediastinal
masses and disorders such as myasthenia gravis, pleural diseases and
benign and malignant esophageal problems. Thoracic surgeons are also
directly involved in the management of bullous disease of the lung
manifesting as space-occupying pockets compressing normal lung or
presenting with lung rupture and pneumothorax. "Lung volume reduction
surgery" for the management of diffuse pulmonary emphysema is
also becoming accepted thoracic surgical practice for carefully selected
patients. Finally, thoracic surgeons are usually involved in the management
of airway obstructions secondary to benign and malignant airway conditions.
Endobronchial laser and airway stenting to overcome the obstruction
are thoracic surgical therapies directed toward these problems.
The surgeons of the Allegheny Center for Lung and Thoracic Disease have
demonstrated regional and national leadership in all areas of thoracic surgical practice.
Currently, this group has the largest combined experience with thoracic surgical problems
in the region. Particular areas of interest and expertise in thoracic surgical practice
are highlighted in this description of the center's capabilities.
