Smoking Cessation Program

Cigarette smoking increases the risk for heart attack and stroke and is the major cause of emphysema and lung cancer. Prevention of these illnesses centers on the prevention of smoking initiation and, failing that, the success of smoking cessation. Smoking cessation can immediately reduce the risk for heart attack, stroke and lung cancer.
Photo "Smoke No More," a seven-week program offered through  Allegheny General Hospital's Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehab Services, helps patients identify triggers to smoking and learn strategies to quit.

There are numerous strategies for smoking cessation, but combined modality approaches are the most successful. A seven-week program, "Smoke No More," is offered four times a year by Allegheny General Hospital's Cardiac & Pulmonary Rehab Services. In this program, patients learn the triggers for smoking and behavior modification strategies that enable them to quit. Relapse prevention strategies and group support are provided to assist in the maintenance of a smoke-free lifestyle.
